Matakana Village has long been known as a destination for boutique shopping, artisan food, and a warm, community-driven atmosphere. But recently, this reputation has also made it the target of overseas scammers.

Misleading websites are appearing online, masquerading as genuine Matakana retailers. Alana Silk, owner of TWO Boutique, had more than 30 customers in recent weeks looking for jumpers they’d seen online – items she does not stock. “Most of them travelled to Matakana especially to try it on. They were shocked when I explained it was a scam,” she says.

The same scam has affected Amy Hope of Matakana Boutique, whose name was copied for a fraudulent clothing website. The real Matakana Boutique operates with a .co.nz domain, while the scam’s .com site uses AI-generated images and sells poor-quality goods from offshore. “People think they’re supporting a local business. With no way to return items or get support, they call me,” Amy explains.

Both businesses have reported the issue to the Commerce Commission and are encouraging shoppers to do the same. Most importantly, they want to remind visitors of the joy of buying local – whether browsing in-store, or purchasing directly through trusted New Zealand websites. Every purchase supports the people, businesses, and community that make Matakana Village special.

This spring, Matakana Village will once again be transformed by its stunning cherry blossoms, planted nearly 20 years ago by founders Richard and Christine Didsbury. These blooms draw visitors from across the country and provide the perfect backdrop to the Saturday Farmers’ Market, boutique shopping, and dining.
