DONKEY TAILS FROM HIGHFIELD
Highfield Garden Reserve has long been known for the charm of its resident donkeys, and now their stories have come to life in print.
In 2024, inspired by the delight children experience when meeting the donkeys, the Highfield Committee set out to create a children’s storybook celebrating this special connection. Jenny Roberts, granddaughter of Alison and Ted Roberts, original owners of the reserve, had already written four stories inspired by real events, and the committee agreed it was time to bring them to the community.
While excitement ran high, challenges soon emerged. The committee had no experience in book production, and theory debated whether to create an online version with graphics and voiceovers, or opt for a more traditional picture book. Progress accelerated when a long-time visitor and supporter generously offered to fund the project, giving the committee the confidence to move ahead.
An illustrator was engaged, and the stories and artwork went through several revisions before being finalised. After careful consideration selecting a printer, the book was sent to production. The finished result features the reserve’s own Peter Caccia- Birch and Truffle on the cover, along with four heartwarming tales: Off the Donkey’s Back, Puddles, The Christmas Refusal, and Donkey Day.
Thanks to Jenny’s heartfelt writing and the committee’s dedication, the book has become a cherished part of the Highfield experience since its release in November. Families now visit not only to meet the donkeys but also to share in their stories, sparking ideas for a possible second edition.
This collaboration has created a lasting legacy, honouring the special bond between the donkeys and the community. Books cost $20 each plus postage, with all proceeds going to Highfield Garden Reserve and Donkey Society Incorporated.
