WAIPU WINTER FESTIVAL
When winter settles over Waipu, something special happens. Far from being a quiet off-season, June and July bring a lively calendar of events for locals and visitors alike – a celebration of community, creativity, and the town's rich Scottish heritage.
The season kicks off with the King's Birthday Markets at Caledonian Park, filled with handmade crafts, local food, and the welcoming spirit that defines Waipu. For those who love getting hands-on, the Black Shed Artspace hosts a series of clay workshops where participants can craft everything from coral reefs to mugs and whimsical night creatures. These sessions are as much about connection as they are creativity.
Even practical pursuits take on a social twist. A composting made simple session – complete with wine and nibbles – turns sustainable living into a memorable community event, while aerial yoga at the Heritage School offers a chance to stretch, unwind, and try something new.
Evening entertainment is equally varied. Razza Riddler quiz nights and community bingo offer relaxed midweek gatherings, while Stars in Their Eyes – where locals transform into their musical idols for a series of dazzling shows – is a festival highlight not to be missed. While The Great Debate tackles the pressing question of Board Shorts vs Kilts with the kind of wit and irreverence only Waipu can deliver.
Heritage runs through the whole programme. Seafaring and Shipwreck Stories invites visitors to step back in time, while charity markets and community fundraisers reflect the generosity and connection at the heart of this small Northland town.
This winter, don't hibernate – head to Waipu for a season full of fun, festivity, and unforgettable moments.
