Shear Family Fun

Sheepworld is a local landmark just north of Warkworth on State Highway One. It is easy to find, thanks to the pink sheep often seen grazing out front. The farm park, playground and Berries Café and Organic Ice Creamery, are open every day from 10am-4pm so you can stop in anytime. Everyone will enjoy feeding the animals which include donkeys, ponies, pigs, deer, emu, alpacas and of course sheep. A short, eco-discovery trail showcases New Zealand’s native bush and wetlands. They also have great onsite picnic areas as well as the stone field which features an adventure, terrain park and gives the kids a chance to run wild.

The Sheep and Dog Show at Sheepworld is a huge tourist attraction and it is also a thoroughly enjoyable day out for locals. John is an engaging host and it is fascinating to learn how the sheepdogs are trained and see them in action. Best of all there are plenty of opportunities to get hands-on whether it is sorting sheep, having a go at shearing or bottle feeding the lambs! Shows are held daily at 11am and 2pm, with a daily eel-feeding at 1.15pm. There is also an additional Sunday show at 12.30pm in Chinese.

Berries Café and Organic Ice Creamery opened on the first of December. Logan and his team offer an exciting range of cabinet options, a full breakfast and lunch menu and of course coffee and ice-cream. The café also features a special ‘Honey Corner’ in collaboration with local producer ‘Honey By The Sea’. Logan is also establishing a gallery for local artists, within the café. Berries Café provides the perfect spot for kids parties in conjunction with the farm park and the onsite playground.

Sheepworld hasn’t forgotten about those who love a little retail therapy. Their Ecowool store stocks luxury sheepskin rugs and footwear, premium quality merino wool and possum knitwear New Zealand crafts and jewellery. There really is something for everyone and the shop has been very thoughtfully curated to provide the best that New Zealand has to offer without resorting to the usual souvenirs.

There are special Sunday Fundays each week throughout the holidays with an eco-trail tour, animal talks, and up-close animal encounters with Bunny the goat, Ruby the pig and Herbie the ram and many other farmyard friends. There will also be different activities available each week with the details being published on Sheepworld’s Facebook page. The idea of life on the farm has always been a part of who Kiwis are. Sheepworld Warkworth provides a unique opportunity to be a part of it all. So plan your perfect summer outing today.
