Cottage With Heart: Modern Chic, Historical Charm

I have long been a fan of beautiful Matakana, New Zealand’s very own slow living capital and one of my favourite places to get away to that is less than an hour’s drive from my home in Central Auckland. No ferry queues or delayed flights, just jump in the car and before you know it, you’re smack bang in one of Northland’s best destinations.

My visits haven’t always adhered to the ‘slow’ principal though, often involving an early Saturday morning alarm so we can hit the markets on time, followed by a quick walk and a dip at the beach or a visit to a winery, and then back on the road home. However, this all changed back in December when I had a pre-silly season mini break at the newly opened White Cottage, right in the heart of Matakana village. It’s quite literally just a few steps from the entrance to the famous market itself. White Cottage is a true local icon and a sister property to the Black & White Barn, which took home the award for Best Accommodation at the 2018 Junction Awards.

One of the first residences to grace the landscape in 1883, the White Cottage embodies the heritage and heart of the much-loved region – but with a thoroughly modern touch. From the local produce welcoming me in the retro-style Smeg fridge to the Morris & James mugs, it is the perfect mix of then and now, with an unabashedly chic yet comfy edge. Guests have even been able to take home some of the stellar design details you’ll spot around the home, which are available via the online boutique section of their website.

Built by the Lovelock family from native kauri sourced nearby, the elegant home was lovingly refurbished by Amy and Simon Hope in mid-2018 and represents a unique opportunity for its guests to stay right in the heart of the village and minutes from the region’s famous beaches and wineries. Renovated in collaboration with local artisans and craftspeople, the two-bedroom home comes complete with entertainer’s kitchen and spacious living area, as well as the opportunity to spill onto the large outdoor dining area for al fresco fun once summer hits. Intuitively refurbished, it retains the soul of a home but with all of the essentials of modern life.

As the joint owners of the Cool Food catering and wholesale company, Amy and Simon are true foodies, and their knowledge proves invaluable when it comes to the best spots for drinking, shopping and dining in the region. They also offer on-site catering for those that want to make their stay at White Cottage extra special - an option worth exploring with cocktails, cheese platters and canapés a perfect match for the cottage’s spacious outdoor entertaining area. If you’re travelling with a bigger group or for a special occasion, there is also the possibility of booking both the White Cottage and the Black & White Barn next door.

The White Cottage is perfectly positioned to take full advantage of all the vibrant experiences Northland region has to offer; I’m already planning my next visit – so get in quick!
