Oyster Festival Matakana

The Oyster Festival Matakana kicks off on Sunday 6 October and celebrates the shucking season with a selection of the Mahurangi’s finest home-grown oysters. Alongside a bevvy of oyster dishes, local wines, craft beers, cider and of course champagne. There’s also an all-day oyster shucking competition, ‘Buddy Bar’ and foodie demonstrations with wine pairing from the Matakana Winegrowers Association, Shucking Classes, local panel discussions and more.

And for those that aren’t partial to the slippery little bivalves there’s plenty of other tasty delicacies on offer, from Rosé Crafted Cakes to Ringawera Bakery, Source Kitchen, Whitebait Fritters from Manaki Whitebait and many more joining in the fun! This boutique tepee style village, provided by TopKata, will house over 40 artisan producers of food, wine, beer and of course oysters aplenty. The festival proudly claims 90% of its stall holders are local, a real Matakana food story.

The handpicked line up of live music including The Up-Doos, Jim Pinckney and The Ibeju Pleasure Club is the icing on the cake, for a perfect day of oysters, a glass of your favourite drop while enjoying the sunshine and the Omaha Estuary.

The festival falls on the second week of the school holidays and is the perfect getaway or day out with the kids. This year Pakiri School hosts the kid’s entertainment with a long list of activities for the kids to enjoy from flax weaving, silent disco, kids yoga, flapjack making and old school games. ‘Mud Kitchens’ by Made for Mischief will provide a creative play-space that will keep your little one busy.

VIP tickets sold out within a few weeks but now a limited number have been released! These tickets will upgrade your festival experience and include priority parking and entrance queuing, access to the VIP Private Bar, plus a Mimosa on arrival and picnic box.

Local transport is sorted thanks to shuttle services provided by The Concierge, catering to Warkworth, Snells Beach, Matakana and Leigh for $21 return, plus a hop-on / hop-off bus doing the Omaha Loop. Aucklanders can pick up an event bus from the city, North Shore or Silverdale for $28 return. Mangawhai travellers can contact Leabourns for details.

So go on, get shucked and enjoy the best that the Matakana region has to offer - only at Oyster Festival Matakana.
