Mangawhai Walking Weekend

Spoilt for Choice New Zealand’s oldest walking weekend is in its 18th year this March, but the Mangawhai team is still discovering exciting new walks – 36 in total this year – as well as new activities and performers. Mangawhai is renowned for its beautiful beaches, coastal views and island-dotted Pacific vistas, and many of our walks enjoy these spectacular views. The bush-clad Brynderwyn hills provide a splendid backdrop, with their pristine streams, waterfalls and ancient trees. Between the bush and the ocean, Mangawhai has a vibrant farming, horticultural, wine-producing and artisan community, and many of the weekend events enable participants to talk to producers. Ten walks take place on private properties – one will give you access to a selection of outstanding Blokes’ Sheds! Warm up for the weekend with the unique Troubadour Trail on Friday afternoon; this stroll around the beautiful Mangawhai estuary takes in five live performances in hidden gardens and estuary reserves. Saturday is the big walking day and along with the favourites such as the Mangawhai Cliff Top Walk, the Tanekaha Tracks, Tomarata Lakes, Waipu Coastal Track and Garden Spectacular, there are many new trails to walk and explore. Following recent seismic events on the Kaikoura coast, you may wish to learn about our geological history on the Geology Walk – see how the rock formations of the Mangawhai embayment were created and continue to evolve. All walks are graded for difficulty and guided by knowledgeable locals, and there are many great tales to tell. On Saturday afternoon the Wine and Food Festival springs to life in the Olive Grove. Relax, catch up on the experiences of the day with friends, enjoy great local wines and beers and outstanding food, and dance till dusk to the music of Daughters of Ally. Sunday kicks off with the Walkers’ Big Breakfast – this brilliant buffet will set you up the day. Try a climb to the top of Bald Rock, a distinctive local landmark which offers spectacular views from Kaipara to Mangawhai. The Mangawhai Walking Weekend is always hugely popular, and numbers are limited on all walks, so book early and come walk with us in 2017! Bookings open 6th January, and full details of all activities available are on our website. Mangawhai Walking Weekend: | 24-26 March 2017
