Music in the Gardens - Kawau Island
Kawau Island deserves a serious attention as far as Junction is concerned. It's about time it was recognised for its extraordinary beauty and uniqueness (but hopefully not at the expense of its cruisy island vibe).
The beautiful island is most famous for the extraordinary (and recently-renovated) Mansion House, the original residence of Sir George Grey, first Governor of NZ. He created not only the mansion, but also a kind of garden paradise with hundreds of species of plants – and exotic animals too. Bad idea as it turns out.
A few remaining peacocks are now the only surviving evidence of Grey's folly – the wallabies had to be culled a few years ago when the extent of the damage they were causing to native vegetation was realised. The Pohutakawa Trust of Kawau took on the mammoth task of righting what some said was irreversible environmental damage. Although there's still a way to go, the island is now home to many kiwi and a whopping two-thirds of the entire North Island population of weka, along with brown teal, kaka, kereru and bellbirds.
This February, for the third year, Kawau will resound to the sounds of Music in the Gardens. The lush grounds of Mansion House will host the funky Conscious Music Collective plus super-groovers Sal Valentine and the Babyshakes, who will certainly be inducing Junction staff to get on down. Especially after sampling the fantastic local wine, beer and cider on offer, together with fantastic local gourmet food stalls. There will no doubt be enthusiastic participation in the auctions, both silent and live…
This will be a perfect day out, with funds raised by OPAK (Organisations Passionate About Kawau) going towards the very worthy Camp Bentzon Trust, Kawau Volunteer Coastguards and KERT (Kawau Emergency Response Trust).
