REAL WEDDING - AMONG THE DAHLIAS

Gemma and Liam were introduced in their mid-twenties through a mutual connection that has since become family – Liam's high school friend was dating Gemma's sister. Both deeply connected to the environment in their own ways – Liam, a capsicum grower and Gemma working in environmental policy and regulation – it felt fitting that when it came time to marry, nature would set the scene.

The venue was a natural choice, Gemma's sister Anna's flower farm, Where Rosemary Grows, in Kaipara Flats, just ten minutes from their rural Warkworth home. Set among rows of dahlias in full bloom, a marquee elevated the event, creating a relaxed yet visually striking affair with beautiful furniture and the kind of colour that only a working flower farm can offer. The couple spent many weekends preparing the grounds themselves, and it showed – the property looked stunning on the day.

With two children of their own and many friends and family also with young kids, keeping them at the heart of the celebration was important to both Gemma and Liam. A bouncy castle kept the younger guests well entertained, while a DIY self-serve ice cream cart from Charlie's Gelato proved equally popular. The catering was locally inspired, and celebrant Frankie Orange delivered a ceremony that was heartfelt and memorable.

Gemma's gown was custom-made by Brooke Tyson Ritual, perfectly tailored and entirely her own, while Liam wore a green suit – a quiet nod, Gemma suggests, to his love of plants. Her wedding ring, an 18-carat gold band set with a yellow beryl, was chosen in Sri Lanka just weeks before the wedding – a planned personal keepsake from that trip.

Having a wedding planner, Gemma says, was essential – and something Anna also managed for her alongside styling and florals. Handing over the logistics meant they could focus on what mattered most and simply enjoy the day. “Communicate your overall vision and then trust your vendors to bring that to life,” says Gemma.

Among their favourite memories: having everyone they love together in one place, and Liam walking down the aisle alongside his 93-year-old Nana.
