CULTIVATING SOIL AND CONNECTIONS

In Omaha, the spirit of growing and community thrives, brought to life by the innovative Omaha Garden Collective.

Long before Omaha became known for beach houses, the Omaha Flats were recognised for the high-quality produce grown from its rich peat soils. For generations, this land supported market gardens and local families, supplying fruit and vegetables well beyond the coastline.

That productive history continues today at Quail Farm, where Brigitte Knill and her husband Gareth have established Omaha Garden Collective within their orchard. The idea grew from a simple observation: while many locals embrace the coastal lifestyle, there is also a desire to remain connected to the land. With fertile ground already thriving beneath their orchard rows, the Knills created a garden community that allows others to share in the productivity of the Flats.

Members lease private plots within the orchard setting, growing seasonal vegetables, herbs, and flowers in soil known for its depth and performance. Water is provided, the grounds are maintained, and optional guidance is available, allowing members to focus on planting, tending, and harvesting at their own pace.

Its strength lies in the combination of a beautiful setting and a supportive growing community. Omaha Garden Collective is not a suburban allotment or temporary initiative, but a working piece of horticultural land embedded in the area’s history. Close enough to feel the sea breeze, yet firmly rooted in rich growing soil, it reflects the dual character of Omaha – coastal and productive.

The gardens are currently fully leased, with a waitlist open for future availability. Family-founded and locally run, Omaha Garden Collective is grounded in the belief that good land grows good community and should be actively used and shared.
