With a new base on the Mahurangi Peninsula, design-led architecture studio DRAWN is bringing considered coastal design and invaluable planning expertise closer to home.

Established in 2012, DRAWN is a versatile team of seven deeply influenced by landscape, climate, and exposure. With an established body of work across Auckland and Waiheke Island, the practice has recently opened a local base in Snells Beach – bringing its expertise in renovations, new homes, cabins, and small-scale developments to the coastal and bush-clad landscapes of the Northern Region. 

Projects are carried through with an emphasis on client collaboration, from early conversations through to detailed design and consent, with close builder relationships ensuring ambitious ideas are both beautifully realised and practically buildable.

Across the coastal communities DRAWN works within, navigating council requirements has become an increasingly complex undertaking. Recent planning changes have introduced both genuine opportunity and real uncertainty. The introduction of exemptions for minor dwellings under 70sqm, for example, opens up new ways of living – whether accommodating extended family, hosting guests, or adding long-term value – yet each site demands careful interpretation of both rules and context. 

Greater emphasis on natural hazards and environmental impact means many projects now begin with a deeper investigation of the land itself. While this can feel daunting, it also has the potential to shape more thoughtful, responsive design outcomes when approached with clarity.

In DRAWN's hands, the process of designing a home becomes an opportunity to turn constraints into drivers of design – creating something that feels both unique and enduring.
