REELING IN THE NEXT GENERATIONS
Nicky Wilson has spent her life bringing the excitement of fishing to communities across New Zealand.
Nicky Wilson (née Sinden) has become a familiar and much-loved figure in New Zealand’s fishing scene, known for her adventurous spirit, enthusiasm, and her long-running TV series Addicted to Fishing. Her career has taken her across the country, chasing everything from snapper to bluefin tuna, while sharing the stories, people, and wild waters that make Aotearoa unique. Along the way, she has championed sustainable fishing, ocean conservation, and community connection, shaping her career and inspiring the way thousands of Kiwis connect with the ocean.
In recent years, Nicky has focused her attention on inspiring and educating the next generation through her popular Kids’ Fishing Workshops across Northland and Auckland, all of which have sold out. Each session provides hands-on learning, teaching children how to cast, tie knots, and set up their own fishing rods. Every participant leaves with new skills, a sense of achievement, and their very own tackle box. For many, it is their first real introduction to fishing, and Nicky ensures the experience is positive, memorable, and sparks a lifelong passion for the ocean.
Based in Mangawhai for almost a decade, while her fishing journey began long before, Mangawhai has become the hub where she combines family life, community involvement, and her workshops programme. Nicky’s workshops have been held in Mangawhai, at the Marsden Cove Fishing Club, and at the Onboard Boating Club in Auckland, connecting with families across different regions.
Nicky’s education work extends to adults as well; her sold-out Ladies Fishing Workshop welcomed over 20 women keen to learn the basics of gear, rigging, casting, and essential techniques, all delivered in a relaxed, supportive environment. The workshop showed there is strong interest in accessible, confidence-building fishing education for adults too.
Through a career built on passion, expertise, and a love of the sea, Nicky continues to share her knowledge and enthusiasm with the community. Her work, from TV and hands-on workshops to mentoring and advocacy, reflects her commitment to sustainable fishing, ocean education, and creating meaningful experiences for Kiwis of all ages.
