ON THE ROAD TO LESS WASTE

Northland’s new mobile refill station, The Refillery, is designed to make sustainable living more convenient, affordable, and accessible – especially for rural and coastal communities.

The Refillery is the creation of Kaipara local Leigh Bowness-Barker, whose practical eye for problem solving brought the idea to life. After running a wallpaper business with her sister and co-owning a local scaffolding company, Leigh knows what it takes to build something from the ground up. One day, standing at the kitchen sink and staring at yet another empty plastic bottle, she thought: there has to be a better way. She wanted to reduce her waste without driving for hours or paying a premium – so she created the solution herself.

Now in its final stages of preparation, The Refillery van (affectionately known as Daisy) will soon be fitted out with a range of New Zealand-made, cruelty-free, and chemical- free products for home and body. Customers simply bring their own bottles, refill what they need, and pay less than standard retail – no excess packaging, no waste, no long trip.

But The Refillery is more than just a refill service on wheels. It’s also about connection, community, and practical change – offering a welcoming, low-pressure way to rethink everyday consumption habits. Whether someone is new to refilling or already living low-waste, all are welcome.

Daisy will make regular stops at markets and towns across the region, including Waipu, Waipu Cove, Langs Beach, Mangawhai, Ruakākā, Paparoa, Maungaturoto and Tinopai – staying in each location for a few hours every few weeks. Leigh also plans to collaborate with local makers and small businesses to add extra value to each stop, turning refilling into a social and community-minded experience.

Launching Monday 20 October to coincide with Recycling Week, The Refillery is already generating interest before hitting the road. With its mix of convenience, environmental values, and community appeal, it’s set to become a regular and welcome fixture across the region.

The Refillery is proudly supported by Northland Inc, Transpower and NorthChamber.
