Blueberry Country – Waipu is the newest addition to New Zealand’s largest family-owned blueberry orchard group.

The much-loved Blueberry Country experience has arrived in the heart of rural Northland. Having opened for its first season recently, the Waipu orchard is already attracting families, day-trippers, and holidaymakers looking for simple, wholesome summer fun.

Blueberry Country’s story began decades ago at its flagship Ōhaupō orchard, later expanding to Ngātea and Otautau. These long-standing sites have become iconic summer destinations, where families return year after year to pick berries, enjoy real fruit ice cream, and build traditions that often span generations. Waipu has been created with that same vision: a young orchard with the potential to become a cherished seasonal ritual for the local community.

Set on a peaceful rural block, Blueberry Country – Waipu embraces a deliberately simple, down-to-earth setup. With rows of thriving blueberry plants, a farm shed with a couple of toilets, and the orchard’s signature real fruit ice cream station, it offers visitors an authentic working-orchard experience. The Pick Your Own (PYO) season runs from January through to March, giving families the chance to wander the rows and fill their buckets with fresh, sun-ripened blueberries.

Beyond the summer PYO season, the orchard welcomes visitors year-round. Guests can swing by anytime for Frozen Blueberries to stock their freezers, along with Blueberry Country’s famous Real Fruit Ice Cream, which remains available throughout the year – offering a sweet detour no matter the season.

Blueberry Country is backed by a team with deep horticultural expertise and a passion for connecting people with the land. Their commitment to sustainable growing, community engagement, and creating welcoming outdoor spaces shapes every orchard site. Though still new, Waipu is already finding its rhythm and carving out its place in the wider Blueberry Country family.

With each passing summer, the team hopes Waipu will grow into the same beloved, tradition-forming destination as Ōhaupō, Otautau, and Ngātea – a place where Northlanders mark the start of the season with sunshine, berries, and orchard-fresh ice cream in hand.
