PRESERVING A LEGACY

What began as a weekend hobby in Puhoi has grown into a beloved Matakana Village Farmers' Market tradition – and a lasting family legacy of flavour, creativity, and community.

More than twelve years ago, after the family purchased a property in Puhoi, John Burton discovered an unexpected talent for creating chutneys, relishes, mustards, jams, and spice rubs. Around the same time, he began selling his handmade products at the Matakana Village Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings, quickly establishing himself as a familiar face to locals and visitors alike.

Despite never having made chutneys before, John proved to be a natural. His creativity, attention to detail, and love of good food quickly earned him a loyal following, with customers travelling from all over New Zealand to sample his creations.

Signature favourites such as the Chilli Jam, Tomato Kasundi, Date and Lime Chutney, and Smoked Manuka Chilli Rub became sought-after staples for market-goers. Fruit from the family’s own trees often finds its way into the recipes, adding to their authentic, homemade charm.

Two years ago, John’s health began to decline. His family stepped in to help keep the business running smoothly. When John sadly passed away earlier this year, his wife and daughters were determined to continue the work he had started. Today, his wife lovingly handcrafts each batch, while their youngest daughter oversees the operations behind the scenes, and both sisters manage the bustling market stall every weekend.

Looking to the future, they hope to expand their reach with a dedicated website, but for now remain proudly “old school,” taking orders by email, sharing updates and flavours on their new Instagram account, and welcoming customers at the Matakana Village Farmers' Market – where John’s spirit is felt in every conversation and every jar sold.

For the family, the business is far more than just jars on a table. It is a way of honouring John’s passion and preserving the community he built through food and conversation. Every chutney sold carries his legacy forward – one of flavour, family, and connection.
