RINGING IN HERITAGE – DAVE PARKER
With a bell in hand and a booming voice, Warkworth’s Town Crier keeps a centuries-old tradition alive.
Once the bearers of public news and proclamations, town criers were the voices of their village, summoning townsfolk with a triple “O yez” or “Hear ye.” While the role faded with the rise of newspapers and radio, the spirit of the town crier has been lovingly revived in Warkworth. For the past five years, local identity Dave Parker has carried the title, proudly ringing his bell at parades, festivals, and community gatherings – bringing history, heart, and a touch of theatre to modern-day events.
Dave’s connection to Warkworth’s community life runs deep. He has been part of the Kowhai Festival since its inception 53 years ago, helping to grow it into one of the town’s most beloved annual events. It was the festival committee that first came up with the idea of appointing a town crier to help promote the celebrations – a role initially taken on by former resident Harry Sutcliffe, who later moved south and continued his calling in Whakatāne. When the bell eventually passed to Dave, he brought his own warm style and easy humour to the position.
“Since my early twenties, I’ve been involved in event management and promotion as a volunteer – all to help put Warkworth and its district on the map,” Dave says. “Becoming the Town Crier felt like a continuation of that work. I enjoy walking the streets, ringing my bell, announcing events, and welcoming visitors to our township. It’s a rewarding experience, especially when I get to chat with people from all over New Zealand and around the world.”
Over the years, Dave’s distinctive presence has become a familiar part of local life. From Santa parades and school reunions to birthdays and civic celebrations, his booming voice and signature bell add a touch of tradition and fun. “It’s great catching up with locals on the street – particularly our senior citizens who enjoy a bit of banter,” he says. “The younger generation is often mystified, wondering who this guy is!”
Dave’s duties occasionally take him beyond Warkworth to nearby Matakana, Wellsford, and Ōrewa – wherever there’s an opportunity to promote a local event or spread a bit of joy. But after five enthusiastic years as the town’s voice, he’s ready to hand over the bell.
“I’m trying to retire as Town Crier,” he says with a laugh. “It’s rewarding and a lot of fun, but it’s time for someone new to take it on. So if anyone’s keen, give me a call.” The role of Warkworth Town Crier remains open – offering an opportunity to carry forward an old-world tradition with a contemporary twist, and become the voice of community celebration.
While Warkworth’s Town Crier tradition will soon enter its next chapter, it will continue ringing loud, connecting people, and celebrating the heart of the community.
