BASKETS PLUS: A PLACE TO BELONG

A new grassroots initiative in Warkworth is quietly creating spacefor connection, conversation, and community.

Baskets Plus Community Hub opened its doors six months ago with a simple mission: to support physical, emotional, and social wellbeing through genuine connection and purposeful group activities. From its home at 15B Neville Street, Warkworth, the hub has quickly become a welcoming meeting point for families, seniors, teenagers, and anyone seeking companionship, conversation, or a quiet cup of tea – all offered for a gold-coin koha to keep the space accessible to all.

The hub was founded by Josephine Kaggwa, a former healthcare support worker, inspired by her time providing in-home care. During that work, she regularly visited adults and seniors living alone – often isolated and longing for simple companionship. Many were capable of participating in group activities or simply needed conversation and connection. Recognising this gap, Josephine stepped away from her role to establish Baskets Plus as a place where people could gather, connect, and feel a true sense of belonging.

While the community response has been overwhelmingly positive, the hub is now facing financial pressure. Josephine’s personal investment in setting up the space is nearly exhausted, and monthly rent remains the primary expense. Having a central, visible location has proven essential for accessibility and for reaching those who benefit most from the space.

Despite these challenges, the hub continues to thrive. The hub hosts regular weekly groups, families with children visit often, young people drop in to play games, pool, or table tennis, and travellers passing through frequently stop for a chat and a rest. It has become clear that Baskets Plus has filled a meaningful gap in the local community.

To support the hub, visit their Facebook page, reach out to Josephine, drop by for a koha, or donate via their Givealittle page to help keep the doors open.
