THE DARING DISCOVERY CENTRE
Set to become one of New Zealand’s most innovative historical and educational destinations – embark on an extraordinary journey to help shape this project.
Junction first shared the story of the schooner Daring in May 2021. Since then, her preservation has advanced remarkably. Now resting on a purpose-built cradle, her hull has been straightened, timbers cleaned, and missing components carefully restored. A temporary shelter protects her, but the real work continues behind the scenes.
Scientific research has been central to the project, led by Heritage Preservation Field Solutions Director Susanne Grieve Rawson. Susanne’s analysis of timber core samples is guiding precise preservation strategies, while a dedicated local team is uncovering insights into Daring’s unique structure.
This research has revealed Daring’s original construction sequence, which will be brought to life at the future Daring Discovery Centre. Her hull has been digitally scanned to produce a 3D model by acclaimed marine architects Craig and Claud Loomes of LOMOcean. This will be tested in a virtual tank to simulate the ship’s original performance, then transformed into an interactive exhibit – a groundbreaking feat of reverse engineering.
The restoration has attracted maritime legends, including Olympic sailor Steve Marten of Marten Marine, who crafted a 1:15 radio-controlled model of Daring, down to the last detail. Filmmaker Roger Mills of Humming Bird Productions captured the model’s sea trials, adding another dimension to the story.
Beyond the vessel, the lives and legacies of Daring’s builders, owner, and skipper reflect New Zealand’s pioneering spirit. Maritime historian Don Armitage and a descendant of Daring’s skipper, have documented their histories, enriching the project’s cultural depth.
With most research complete and plans in place, the Daring Discovery Centre is a shovel-ready project awaiting funding. More than a museum, it promises to be a national legacy – an inspiring blend of history, innovation, and education that every New Zealander can take pride in.
Step aboard and help propel this little ship toward her next extraordinary voyage. Open for viewing daily between 11am and 1pm, with large groups by appointment.
