CHASING WATERFALLS

Discover the region’s hidden waterfalls, many nestled along short bush tracks, offering a tranquil escape and the chance for a refreshing dip. Most are easily accessible, but it’s wise to check current conditions before setting out.

Pohuehue Falls

Pōhuehue Rd, Pōhuehue

Part of the The Moirs Hill Walkway, follow the Waterfall Track from the carpark on the west side of the Old SH 1/Twin Coast Discovery Highway immediately past the Pōhuehue Viaduct. An easy 20-30 minute, well- signposted walk through regenerating native bush leads to a small waterfall and viewing platform positioned above the falls.

Kohuroa Stream Waterfalls

Matheson Bay, Leigh

The Matheson Bay Bush Walk follows the Kohuroa Stream through lush native bush and features several waterfalls and cascades. An easy 30-40 minute return walk begins near the beachfront parking area, featuring the first waterfall just five minutes in, complete with a large swimming hole and rope swing. Continue upstream to discover several more cascades, including the tallest and most striking which awaits near the end of the track. Return the same way, or complete the trail as a one-way walk finishing at Leigh Road.

Tanekaha Waterfalls

King Rd, Mangawhai

A hidden gem near Mangawhai, the Tanekaha Waterfalls are a trio of beautiful cascades found along the Tanekaha Falls Track. The well-marked bush track features benches, viewpoints, and several easy stream crossings – though it can get muddy, so sturdy footwear is recommended. The first waterfall appears after about 30-40 minutes, followed by a striking multi-tiered fall roughly 25 metres high. Return via the same route (1.5-2 hours total) or extend the adventure by taking the full Tanekaha Loop Track (4-5 hours).

Piroa Falls

Waipu Gorge Rd, Waipu

At the northern side of the Bryderwyn Hills, Piroa Falls is a picturesque 20m fall on the Ahuroa River. A short 10-minute scenic walk through native bush and a beautiful gorge, leads to swimming holes and a picnic area, including a deep pool at the foot of the falls itself. Check river levels before crossing the river to reach the falls.
