A COASTAL RETREAT IN LANGS

Perched above the stunning coastline of Langs Beach, this architectural build by NF Construction, designed by PAC Studio, elevates and embraces its surroundings.

Langs House is split across two distinct structures: a main house for living and entertaining, and a private tower retreat. While each building has its own identity they’re joined by a shared rhythm of materiality, flow, and function.

From the outset, the brief was clear – maximise the site, capture the views, and build something that would stand the test of time, both structurally and aesthetically. The result is a carefully considered home that responds beautifully to the land, anchored by a deep respect for detail and craftsmanship.

The materials used throughout reflect this ethos. Aluminium cladding and roofing in the “Kahu” profile create sharp, clean lines, while the custom-selected colour palette mirrors the early morning light – a vivid yellow that, while challenging to work with, brings warmth and character to the exterior. Internally, rich Australian hardwoods, including blackbutt timber flooring, bring texture and grounding to the contemporary spaces. The decks are lined with Vitex, offering durability and a natural softness underfoot.

The tower structure stands as a retreat within a retreat, featuring a rooftop deck designed for quiet moments above it all. Beneath lies the master suite, complete with a sauna and shower room that speaks to both luxury and authenticity, finished with thermally treated timber tiles and a wood burner for ultimate comfort.

The main house is laid out in reverse, with bedrooms and a media room tucked below and an open-plan living space that spills out onto wraparound covered decks – perfect for year-round entertaining. Roll- down blinds provide protection from the elements, extending the living zones out into the landscape. From nearly every room, the views are uninterrupted: out to Sail Rock, Hen and Chicken Islands, and across to the Whangārei Heads.

This was by no means a straightforward build. An impressive amount of structural steel was required to support the bold design elements and large cantilevers, and working with such vivid colour tones demanded precision across every detail. The complexity of the project pushed the team – in the best way possible – resulting in a home that balances function, flair, and finesse.

"This build was all about capturing the view and letting nature lead the design. Every space was built to invite light, air, and ease – with detail and intention behind every decision,” says Nic Foster, Director of NF Construction.

Langs House is a true showcase of collaboration – between architect, builder, and landscape. It captures everything that’s special about living on the coast: light, elevation, natural textures, and an unfiltered connection to the environment. Most importantly, it feels like home.
