A LIFETIME SHAPED BY CLAY

Ceramic artist Mike Hooton has spent decades shaping clay into works that balance craftsmanship, experimentation, and a deep connection to place.

Mike’s journey into the world of ceramics began at just sixteen, back when night school classes were a staple of community life. Enrolled in a sculpture course, he was immediately drawn to the pottery wheel tucked away at the back of the classroom. After asking the tutor if he could give it a try, he was hooked. That first encounter with clay set the foundation for what would become a lifelong passion and a career defined by craftsmanship and creativity.

Today, Mike is a contemporary ceramic artist whose ideas emerge from nature, culture, and spontaneous sparks of inspiration. He keeps a sketchbook close, developing concepts into finished pieces while refining others over time. In his studio, he wedges clay for hours, often accompanied by the steady rhythm of a podcast or audiobook. For Mike, the process itself is as important as the finished work – an ongoing balance of focus, experimentation, and joy.

A big step in his journey came with a duo exhibition alongside his partner, figurative artist Laura Worrall. That first show marked the beginning of many exhibitions, each offering the challenge to grow and push beyond previous achievements. His style reflects both mastery of technique and a willingness to take risks. Working primarily on the wheel, he often sculpts and manipulates the forms afterwards to achieve the shapes he envisions. Embracing its unpredictable qualities, Mike frequently uses wild clay, and throughout his career has developed all his own glazes. This hands-on approach gives each of his pieces a unique individuality and depth.

Thirteen years ago, Mike moved from Ruapehu District to Kaipara in search of a more sustainable and balanced life. The land, community, and slower rhythm of the area have profoundly influenced his art, shaping both his creative process and personal philosophy. For him, the balance between work, family, and connection to the land remains central to everything he makes.

In early 2025, Mike co-founded MGTO Gallery in Maungaturoto alongside other artists. The gallery has quickly earned an excellent reputation for contemporary art in the Kaipara, providing artists with a professional space to showcase their work.

Mike’s ceramics are currently on display at MGTO Gallery in the exhibition Light and Shadow. His homeware range is also available online and at local markets, with updates and events shared via social media.
