SHOWING UP FOR LOCAL CHILDREN
The Rodney Health Charitable Trust's commitment to funding specialist assessments for local children continues to grow – and the community's response has been remarkable.
When a child presents with a learning disability or behavioural difficulty, diagnosis is the essential first step toward support. But specialist assessments carry a cost that many families cannot afford, and Ministry of Education funding can take up to two years to come through. In the interim, children struggle – falling behind academically, finding it difficult to form friendships, and experiencing isolation and failure as their everyday normal. The Rodney Health Charitable Trust exists to close that gap, funding prompt specialist assessments so that local children are not left waiting for help they need now.
Since Junction last covered this initiative in October 2025, the trust has funded assessments across seven local schools, contributing approximately $220,000 over three years. Each early diagnosis gives children, families, and teachers the tools they need to move forward.
The community has responded generously. Through donations from local businesses, families, and organisations, a further $43,400 has been raised alongside the trust's own $60,000 commitment for 2026 – enough to meet this year's needs.
But the trust is looking ahead. Demand is growing, specialist services are in short supply, and securing professional support for 2027 requires funding to be in place well before the school year begins. Without early commitment, those services may be lost entirely.
