THE ART OF CONNECTION
For Clare Mora, founder of The Art Precinct, curating a collection that tells the owners story doesn't start with the question "what art do you like?" It's something closer to: what do you want a room to say about you, before a single word is spoken?
"Most people can tell you what colour they want on the walls," Clare says. "Far fewer can tell you how they want to feel walking into a room. That's the conversation we're actually having."
That conversation sits at the heart of The Art Precinct's methodology – a psychology-driven approach developed alongside a behavioural psychologist, designed to map how clients perceive and emotionally respond to art. The result is a selection process that goes well beyond taste, instead uncovering the values, triggers and personal history that make a piece genuinely resonate - then matching artists and artworks to that inner picture with precision.
"It's not about filling walls," Clare explains. "It's storytelling. Every artwork should be doing something – holding its own, but also speaking to the piece beside it, and to the person who lives with it.”
That philosophy carries through into their white glove service, where those insights are carried all the way from first conversation to final placement – through selection, framing, delivery and installation. The client is looked after at every step, so all that remains for them to do is live with a collection that feels entirely, unmistakably their own.
That same discipline shapes how The Art Precinct sources. Working independently of any single gallery means recommendations are never limited to what happens to be on hand – instead, the practice draws on an extensive artistic language spanning established names and emerging talent alike, uncompromising in quality while remaining flexible enough to suit varying budgets
"Good taste isn't about the size of a budget," Clare says. "It's about knowing exactly what you're looking for, and having the relationships to go and find it – whatever the brief calls for.”
The outcome, for clients, is a collection where no single piece is doing all the work. Each artwork plays its own role, but always in conversation with what surrounds it – elevating the act of collecting beyond acquisition and into something closer to storytelling.
That reach extends well beyond New Zealand, with clients across the country, the United States and Germany. Distance is rarely a barrier - advanced Augmented Reality visualisation allows a client in another city, or another country entirely, to see exactly how a piece will sit on their own wall, at true scale, long before it arrives.
“The best collections don’t feel curated at all,” Clare reflects. “They feel like they were always meant to be there.”
