UNBRIDLED WEDDING CELEBRATIONS
When Karen and Roger first drove up the tree-lined driveway of their Waipu property, it was love at first sight.
With ten flat acres spread across two tiers, bordered by a winding river and shaded by towering tōtara trees, the property had all the makings of something special. Before long, Waipu Tōtara Fields was born - a unique events venue blending nature and celebration.
Blending Karen’s passions for horses and photography, she realised a long-held dream of hosting events, with equine- themed hen and stag parties taking centre stage. Many horse lovers surround themselves with like-minded friends, so why not include their trusty steeds in the pre-wedding celebrations? The result: an unforgettable experience filled with laughter, adventure, and a touch of bridal flair.
Guests are encouraged to arrive decked out in wedding attire, with gowns that range from treasured family heirlooms to op-shop gems and creative upcycled finds making appearances. While riders take to the fields for customised games (some best suited for an R18 crowd), non-riding spectators can relax under the shade of the tōtara trees, sipping bubbly and soaking in the atmosphere. When the horses retire to their on-site grazing for the evening, the festivities continue under the stars.
Waipu Tōtara Fields is an eco-stay private campsite with a variety of undercover areas to socialise and dine. Guests can stay the night in horse floats, tents, or the new high-stud shed, with more traditional accommodation available for those who prefer a bit more comfort.
Looking ahead, Karen dreams of expanding the venue to host boutique weddings when she semi-retires - not too far off, she jokes. But for now, she’s focused on providing a stunning natural venue for future brides and grooms to celebrate with their furry friends ahead of the big day in a relaxed, fun, and affordable environment.
Just five minutes from Waipu’s vibrant village, the venue offers the perfect mix of rural charm and modern convenience. Whether it’s a weekend of unique bridal celebrations or a peaceful escape with horses in tow, Waipu Tōtara Fields is where unforgettable memories are made.
