BAKED WITH HEART
Bluebell Market Bakery has become one of Mangawhai’s most cherished gathering spots – a place where good coffee, homemade baking, and community spirit come together.
Owner Laureen Medcalfe and her husband first moved to the area in 1997, settling into a relocated cottage on their dream block of land. Animals soon followed – many rescued, some chosen – then children, friendships, and, eventually, Bluebell Market Bakery. Named after Laureen’s grandmother, Nellie Bluebell, the bakery honours a woman remembered for being ahead of her time – and is a place where Laureen has realised another dream, serving soul food straight from the heart.
Bluebell’s story began with a caravan gifted by her cousin, later transformed by local artists Nicola Everett and Janine Brougham, who hand-painted it with giant bluebells. Originally a pick-up point for Laureen’s home baking, it soon grew into a much-loved destination. A coffee machine was added, two cosy cabins were built from salvaged and gifted materials, and even the paddock fence was moved to create space for an inviting outdoor seating area.
Intentionally filled with anything that tells a story – orders are served on vintage blue plates and mugs, recycled windows adorn the cabins, favourite chairs offer a place to rest, and knee blankets provide winter comfort – adding to its unmistakable quaint charm. This is a place where locals gather to share laughter and friendship, the aroma of fresh baking and coffee enveloping the peaceful rural setting.
Bluebell Market Bakery opens Saturdays from 9am to 2pm and Mondays from 9am to 1pm, also welcoming groups by arrangement. The menu changes weekly, reflecting the seasons and Laureen’s creativity, but locals know to expect staples: three-seed bread and brioche on Saturdays, and custard squares on Mondays.
Reflecting its community roots, Bluebell proudly serves Rush Coffee, supplied by a locally-owned family business who have supported their journey since day one. Regulars will also recognise Laureen’s dad, Wayne, a familiar face behind the counter who is always there serving with a smile. The newest addition is fabulous new signage by local team Juicy Media – ensuring this perfect slice of Mangawhai warmth at 148 Devich Road is easy to find.
Family-supported and deeply rooted in Mangawhai, Bluebell Market Bakery is more than a café – it is a living expression of community, connection, and the simple joy of sharing good food.
