THE REAL DEAL IN A BOTTLE
A favourite across Northland, René’s Kombucha is a truly artisan drink brewed with care, character, and a deep respect for tradition.
Behind the label is René Archner, whose connection to good food began long before he settled in Maungaturoto with his wife Lydia. Born in Berlin, René grew up in a family rooted in orcharding and smallholder agriculture. He learned early that nourishment comes from the land, what it produces, and the people who care for it. That legacy now continues on his organic farm by the Kaipara Harbour, where he crafts the kombucha he’s become known for.
For more than 12 years, René has been brewing commercially, making him one of New Zealand’s earliest kombucha brewers. His drinks are unpasteurised, unfiltered, and never artificially carbonated – instead, they fizz naturally in the bottle, with each one containing the full spectrum of live cultures that make kombucha unique. Every batch is brewed from a blend of organic teas, including Tulsi or Holy Basil, an ancient Ayurvedic herb that adds a floral note and sets rené’s Kombucha apart in flavour and character. The result is a vibrant, mildly sparkling drink often likened to old-fashioned ginger beer.
Certified organic through Organic Farm NZ, René’s range includes bottled kombucha and DIY starter kits for those wanting to brew at home. Customers often share stories of improved digestion and well-being, crediting his kombucha as the only one that truly works for them. René believes kombucha belongs in every family’s kitchen and hopes that future generations will continue to experience what true nourishment tastes and feels like.
Locals can find René each Saturday at the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market and at Sunday markets in Waipu. His kombucha is also stocked at cafés and stores from Mangawhai to Whangārei, with refill stations available for regulars. For those further afield, orders are only a click away with online ordering.
More than a refreshing drink, René’s Kombucha carries forward a tradition of integrity, flavour, and nourishment – a reflection of care and craft in every bottle.
