After a difficult stretch and a well-earned break, Nectar Café is ready to welcome the community back through its doors.
After first opening in 2023, operating alongside Morris & James Pottery, Nectar Café quickly became a firm local favourite. But the past couple of years have brought real hardship for owner Satya, marked by illness and the loss of his wife, alongside the closure of Morris & James itself. Rather than push through, Nectar made the difficult but important decision to pause over winter – time needed to grieve, regroup, and focus on family before starting again.
That new chapter has begun, with Nectar's doors open once more.
While the café remains deeply connected to the place and community that shaped it, there's plenty that's fresh too – much- loved favourites sit alongside new menu additions and a delicious cabinet food selection, with generous gluten-free, dairy- free and vegan options ensuring there's something for everyone.
Just a few minutes from Matakana Village, Nectar offers the best of both worlds: close enough to enjoy everything the village has on offer, but with a more relaxed, spacious setting and easy parking. Sitting right on the local cycle trail, it's also become a natural stop for cyclists and families exploring the area.
The fully licensed café is anchored by a beautiful, dog-friendly courtyard, perfect for settling in with good food, local beer and wine, cocktails, or organic locally roasted coffee. A children's playground keeps the little ones happy, while expanded indoor seating by the fireplace offers a cosy spot on cooler days.
Nectar also continues to offer catering for private functions and events, from relaxed daytime get-togethers to larger evening celebrations. The café has a late licence for private functions with the option of hosting in the courtyard, indoors, or through off-site catering brought directly to events.
For Satya and the team, reopening isn't just about serving good food again – it's about welcoming back familiar faces, meeting new customers and continuing to grow as part of the Matakana community, welcoming guests Wednesday to Sunday.
