A SEAT AT THE TABLE
Every Wednesday morning, a table at Crimson Coast Cafe in Snells Beach sits reserved for something simple but quietly powerful – company, for anyone who wants it.
The Chatty Cafe Scheme is built on a simple idea: bringing people together over a cup of coffee, no strings attached. Much like social sport or community tree-planting days, it offers companionship, and hopefully a laugh or two.
The concept began in 2017, when UK founder Alex Hoskyn, on maternity leave and feeling isolated, started hosting her own café "come-togethers." The idea has since spread to Australia, America, and now New Zealand, introduced locally earlier this year by GrandFriends founder Jo Hayes. Chatty Cafe NZ now runs tables at more than 37 cafés, pubs and community spaces nationwide, with more joining weekly.
Crimson Coast Cafe, at 280 Mahurangi East Road, is the first in the region to take part, reserving a table every Wednesday from 9.30 to 10.30am for anyone wanting to meet others and have a chat. There's no need to book, nothing to pay, and no reason required to come – simply order at the counter and stay for five minutes or the whole hour. Owners Andrew and Amy Algie joined the scheme in June 2026, with local volunteer Tiina hosting the very first morning.
Volunteers are the heartbeat of Chatty Cafe, welcoming people to the table, making introductions, and keeping conversation flowing while Crimson Coast's own staff keep busy behind the counter. All hosts are trained and police vetted, and anyone keen to host is encouraged to volunteer via the Chatty Cafe website.
At its heart, Chatty Cafe is about people stepping out, finding common ground, and enjoying each other's company – breaking up an otherwise ordinary day in a relaxed, informal setting. It's a small gesture with real impact, and one Crimson Coast Cafe is proud to be part of.
