From a humble food trailer to a bright pink storefront on State Highway 1, Tasty Temptations is bringing a genuine slice of South Africa to the heart of Te Hana.

For owner Esmeralda Oppelt, the business has always been about much more than biltong. It's about creating a little taste of home while building a place where the whole community feels welcome.

With years of experience in the South African food industry, including eight years managing a biltong shop, Esmeralda understands exactly what South Africans living in New Zealand miss most from home. Tasty Temptations started small, trading from a food and coffee trailer before finding its first real home in a shop in Kaiwaka. But Esmeralda had bigger ambitions – more visibility, more room to grow, and a genuine sense of place. That search led her to Te Hana, where Tasty Temptations now sits proudly, impossible to miss thanks to its bright pink branding and unmistakable pink elephant out front.

While South African favourites remain at the heart of the business, the larger premises have allowed it to become something far more than a shop. Today it combines a South African grocery store, a biltong counter, and a full café all under one roof – serving everything from droëwors to boerewors, bobotie and vetkoek, milk tart and koeksisters. Customers can pop in for something quick, browse the groceries, or simply sit down for a coffee and a chat.

But food is only part of the story. Esmeralda's vision is to create a genuine gathering place – somewhere with comfortable seating, open mic afternoons, community events, local makers, and relaxed get-togethers, built for connection as much as commerce.

This latest move marks an exciting new chapter for the business, with its warm South African personality quickly winning locals over. Esmeralda's message is simple: come in, have a look, try something new, and make yourself at home.
